Mehdi practices primarily in family law and regularly appears in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia in Victoria. He has also appeared in courts across South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. 

He has extensive experience in both parenting and property matters, including cases involving high-net-worth property pools, contravention applications, relocation disputes, allegations of unacceptable risk, and child abuse issues. Mehdi appeared in one of the earliest matters concerning Harmful Proceedings Orders following the amendments to the Family Law Act, a case that required judicial consideration of legislative intent.

Mehdi regularly appears in trials, interim hearings, and threshold applications, including significant change applications under section 65DAAA and out-of-time applications under section 44 of the Family Law Act. He has also been briefed to appear on behalf of Independent Children’s Lawyers in both trial and case management proceedings.

In addition to his family law practice, Mehdi appears in family violence and personal safety intervention order matters. He has substantial experience conducting contested hearings in these jurisdictions and has achieved successful outcomes across a broad range of complex matters.

Mehdi also accepts briefs in related civil and criminal matters that arise from, or intersect with, family law proceedings. This includes appearances in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), particularly in residential tenancy disputes, as well as contractual disputes and criminal matters in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria. His broad advocacy experience enables him to assist clients in navigating the overlapping legal issues that frequently arise in the context of family law disputes.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Mehdi practised as a solicitor at a specialist family law firm, where he worked on a wide range of parenting, property, and marriage-related matters. He also gained experience at several law firms across Melbourne, including a national firm.

Mehdi holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours). During his tertiary education, he developed advocacy experience by shadowing Counsel and also by competing in the Willem C. Vis. International Commercial Arbitration competition in Vienna against 400 universities worldwide placing in the top 25 per cent of advocates. 

He is also a member of the Family Law Bar Association and the Criminal Law Bar Association.
