John Livitsanos signed the Bar Roll in 2004. John’s main practice is in both Family and Relationships Law and Criminal Law, including Family Violence and Intervention Order matters.
Family Law and Intervention Orders
John appears in the Family Law jurisdiction in both parenting and complex financial disputes, and in Intervention Order matters.
Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation is a focus of John’s practice. John is also available to appear as a mediator in matters. John prides himself on his ability to understand and deal with, and more importantly, resolve complex issues in both parenting and financial/property matters.
Criminal Law
John’s Criminal Law practice is predominantly serious and complex indictable crime including sex, drugs and violence.
John has appeared for both the prosecution and defence in the Supreme, County and Magistrates’ Courts in matters including:
- Trials, Pleas and Appeals as sole counsel
- Bail applications in the Supreme, County and Magistrates’ Courts
- Pleas, contested hearings and contested committals in the Magistrates’ Court
- Mental Impairment matters (including Investigations, Special Hearings and Supervision Order hearings)
- Intervention orders
- VOCAT applications
John has drafted written submissions for and appeared in the Court of Appeal and has also appeared to prosecute local council matters and prosecutions for other statutory bodies. He has also appeared in the Children’s Court in both the Criminal and Family jurisdictions.
John has also worked with, and appeared as junior counsel to senior counsel and welcomes the opportunity for such work.
John is available to provide advice prior to and throughout the entire court process, and of course to appear as counsel.
Prior to coming to the Bar, John completed his Articles and practiced as a solicitor at Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper) in Melbourne, appearing predominantly in the County Court in broad ranging litigation matters and in the Coroner’s Court.

John holds an Indictable Crime Certificate (ICC) from the Victorian Bar.
