David was admitted to practice in 1992. As a solicitor he practiced almost entirely in criminal law. He was accredited by the Law Institute of Victoria as a specialist in criminal law.

Since coming to the bar in 2001 David has practiced exclusively in criminal defence. His main areas of practice are:
• Criminal trials in the higher courts;
• Pleas in the higher courts
• Court of Appeal
• Committals
He also appears in County Court Appeals and some summary matters.
